Whether they admit it or not, everybody struggles with body “problem areas.” There isn’t anyone, anywhere who doesn’t have areas unwanted fat and loose skin on their body that they’d love to smooth and tighten. For some, it’s the thighs. For others, the buttocks. And for still others it could be the stomach, or even the back.  But eradicating those problem areas can often seem impossible. No matter how hard a person works out, or how closely they watch their diet, nothing seems to help. Until recently, the only options for reducing unwanted fat were to undergo surgery or live with the problem. But surgery is expensive. It involves time off of work, and often leads to intense pain. On the other hand, living with these problems areas on the body can lead to frustration and low self-image.

There are new procedures available to patients that want to tighten their skin and reduce the appearance of body fat, but don’t what to undergo the trauma of surgery. Two of the most popular noninvasive surgical alternatives are CoolSculpting™ and truSculpt™. They are two very different types of treatments, but their names sound extremely similar, which can be confusing for many patients. So, what’s the difference between CoolSculpting™ and truSculpt™, and which is right for you?

What is Cool Sculpting™?

CoolSculpting™, formally known as “cryolipolysis,” is a type of fat reduction procedure that destroys fat cells and tightens skin through an intense cooling process.  A suction-cup like device is placed on targeted areas of the body. The skin is then lifted into the device and dramatically cooled. The cooling action kills fat tissue without damaging the surrounding skin. Patients can begin to see results at around eight weeks from their first treatment.

Even though CoolSculpting™ is noninvasive, it does have some potential side effects including:

  • Redness
  • Bruising
  • Skin numbness that can last up to a month

Because of the nature and method of the procedure, not all patients are candidates for CoolSculpting™.

What is truSculpt™?

truSculpt™ is another type of FDA-approved, noninvasive alternative to surgery designed to reduce the appearance of fat, tighten skin, and sculpt targeted areas of the body. Instead of freezing the fat cells, truSculpt™ uses a high-frequency wave to target problem areas with heat.  truSculpt™ does not cause pain, burn the skin, or harm surrounding tissue. The temperature can be adjusted based on the patient’s preferences, and the entire procedure takes less than one hour. Many truSculpt™ patients schedule procedures on their lunch breaks, returning to work and other daily activities as normal.

Side effects of truScuplt™ are minimal and may include some minor redness or swelling that typically lasts just a few hours. Patients can begin to see results after their first treatment, with full results showing between four and eight weeks.

Which Body Sculpting Method is Right for You?

If you dislike pain or intense cold, CoolSculpting™ may not be the best choice for you. Though it is safe, some patients report excessive discomfort during CoolSculpting™ procedures as the suction can be intense, and the dramatic cooling can cause pain.  truSculpt™, however, uses a comfortable heat that causes a natural cell death rather than an intense freezing action.

Most anyone is a candidate for a truSculpt™ treatment, and it can be used on all skin types. Unlike CoolSculpting™, there is no need to have a specific amount of skin (a “pinch test”) to be able to be sucked up into the handpiece.  Because no pinch test is necessary for truSculpt™, it can be used to tighten skin and reduce the appearance of fat on multiple zones of the body - even flat areas such as the shoulders, while CoolSculpting™ can only be performed on the tummy, hips, buttocks, and thighs.
