One of the very first questions that people ask about laser hair removal treatment is: how long does laser hair removal last? It’s an important question when considering your hair removal options, and when weighing the cost of laser hair removal.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

When deciding whether or not to get laser hair removal treatment it’s important to understand that you’ll need more than one treatment to get your desired results. The length of time needed between treatments will depend upon your skin and hair type. Most patients need to undergo six to eight treatments to get the best results. However, the duration between treatments will depend on how the treated area responds and whether or not the patient experiences any side effects.

How Well Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

In laser hair removal treatments, the lasers used work by directing a high concentration, invisible light beam into the root of the hair follicle. This treatment works best on people with lighter skin and darker hair because the laser recognizes the melanin found in the base of the hair follicle. Lighter hair has lower levels of melanin, and darker skin has higher levels which can make it difficult for the laser to work efficiently.

How Often Do I Need Treatments?

Treated hairs take about two weeks to shed, this process is followed by a re-growth phase of approximately four weeks. Since this process takes so long, treatments are usually spaced at least six weeks apart. Once the six to eight sessions have been completed treatment usually halts for a few months. This decision depends mostly upon how successful the procedure is in removing the hair during the previous sessions.

Will I Need Additional Treatment?

Your skin and hair type affects the results of the treatment so much that it makes it difficult to accurately predict how long the hair removal will last. After the initial sessions people with light skin and dark hair can usually wait several months before needing a follow up session; however, this varies person-to-person. If you’re considering treatment you should consult with one of our physicians about how suitable you are for the procedure.
